As members of the marketing and creative community, we have enormous power - and responsibility - to impact public conversations around diversity and inclusion. Lead In is anchored by two amazing speakers who will help us understand how we can create meaningful change in our industry.

Presented by:

Millennials, Leadership, and Countering Implicit Bias: Building a Diverse and Robust Workforce through the Lens of Data

Using entertainment as a backdrop, Dr. Stacy Smith will provide insights into barriers and opportunities in diversifying organizational culture. How does our imagination constrict perceptions of what we look for in a leader? How can we better understand stereotypical thinking to build empathy, individuate people, and foster team inclusion? What are the challenges to diversifying executive ranks when dealing with the existing pipeline of Millennial talent? This session will offer real-time solutions to better connecting with and nurturing an inclusive talent pool.

Amy Emmerich, Chief Content Officer, Refinery29

Speaker:
Stacy Smith, Founder and Director, Media, Diversity and Social Change Initiative at the Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism at USC

Creating a Culture of Inclusivity

As thought leaders and power holders, we need to understand our roles in the effort to foster diversity and inclusion so we can make progress toward those goals. But how do we do that? Acclaimed author, speaker, and entrepreneur Jess Weiner has been confronting this question for more than two decades. As the mind behind Barbie's latest body evolution and Dove's memorable Real Beauty campaign, Weiner knows that changing our culture means partnering with the people who create the message.

Weiner believes that through workforce development, communication to consumers, and education around media literacy, we can solve some of society's problems without sacrificing our bottom line. In this enlightening session, she'll discuss the tangible steps we can take every day—at every level of business—to ensure that we are creating a culture of inclusivity and making products that reflect consumers' demands for representation.

KEYNOTE: From CMO to CEO

In a rapidly changing media world, there's more than one way to get to the CEO's office. For many current executives, that journey began in marketing. Why does transitioning from a senior marketing job to the C-suite make more sense today? We'll talk with several successful CMOs and other high-level entertainment industry marketing heads who made the leap to top leadership positions and find out how they carved their path.

What were the challenges and pitfalls they overcame? What lessons can we learn from their journey? And what are some of the new opportunities for hungry midlevel execs with their eyes on the upper echelons? This revealing panel discusses the skills these leaders needed to develop on their way up and how they now apply what they learned from the top down.

How is the perception of traditional news outlets changing? Have the concepts of "alternative facts" and "fake news" irrevocably altered our national conversation? How influential can media reporters be in combating the flood of misinformation and disinformation? What can ordinary citizens do to protect themselves and bring back civil discourse?

Join Dylan Byers, CNN's senior media reporter, and a panel of esteemed figures from across the media spectrum for a lively discussion of how news programs and organizations are now required to find common ground between politics and marketing in a post-truth world.

KEYNOTE: Six-Word Memoir® Project

Larry Smith developed the wildly popular book series "Six-Word Memoirs," a literary subgenre described as "American haiku" that has become a global phenomenon. Comprising the best-selling series of books, a board game, and a live event series, the project reflects Smith's quest to stimulate the creativity of aspiring writers. Smith launched Six-Word Memoirs in 2006 with a simple online challenge: Can you describe your life story in six words? Now, more than a million short life stories have been shared on sixwordmemoirs.com and countless more in classrooms, boardrooms, churches and synagogues, veterans' groups, and speed-dating sessions, where this short form is a tool to catalyze conversation, spark imagination, and boil big ideas down to their essence. In this one-of-a-kind session, Smith takes us on a journey through his thought process, introduces us to his newest project, “Six Words Fresh off the Boat: Stories of Immigration, Identity, and Coming to America,” and shows how each of us can write the six-word stories of our lives.

The Art of Personal Branding

Limited Capacity - RSVP Required
RSVP: http://promax.tv/ArtBran

Media consultant Joanna Sucherman's powerful workshop is designed to help executives identify, strengthen, and clarify their personal brand. The four segments put participants in touch with how they can best market themselves in a competitive industry. In "What Do I Want to Be When I Grow Up?," executives consider their own brands and how they might change how they're perceived. In "What Makes Me Unique?," the participants define what makes them different from other executives. In "What Are My Strengths . . . Oh Yeah . . . and Weaknesses?," they honestly think about their strengths and weaknesses so they can start to clearly focus on their brand. And in "Marketing," executives break into groups to practice their elevator pitch and new brand message.

Off-Brief: How to Be Wildly Successful by Giving Them What They Didn’t Ask For

As Henry Ford said, "If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses."

We've all seen creative briefs asking for something new, exciting, or "never been done before," but also requiring deliverables, rules, and "must-haves" firmly rooted in what's worked in the past. So in order to succeed, we need to follow the brief exactly, right? Maybe not. As our industry goes through radical change, attracting attention means competing with 400+ original shows, new OTT networks, and video, video everywhere. So who's breaking through, and how are they doing it?

In this inspiring, engaging, and sometimes outrageous session, creative teams and their clients will take us through campaigns that broke rules, threw out what worked in the past, and began with ideas that were decidedly not what the brief asked for.

KEYNOTE: BFD (But First, Digital)

Today it's a given that digital is a primary driver in marketing, particularly in the entertainment industry. Social media, with its immediacy and reach, has opened up amazing new avenues for marketers. But it took trailblazers like Buzzfeed and Funny or Die to crack the code of how to engage with consumers and monetize content.

How are digital publishers carrying this momentum into the future? Where will the next big digital brand idea come from? This cutting-edge panel gets into the nitty-gritty of what goes into building a digital first/digital native brand, including strategies for cross-platform, publishing, video, monetization, and much more.

KEYNOTE: Touchdown LA: A Conversation with the Los Angeles Rams

The Los Angeles Rams are L.A.'s original professional sports team, having played here from 1946 to 1994. Then, after spending 21 seasons in St. Louis, the Rams returned in 2016 and brought NFL football back to this market for the first time in more than two decades. Rams EVP of Football Operations and COO Kevin Demoff led the team back home last season and is currently overseeing a new era of Rams football headed by new Rams Head Coach Sean McVay and General Manager Les Snead.

Part of the Rams' vision for the future is the 298-acre Stadium and Entertainment District being constructed at Hollywood Park, which will include a 70,000 seat stadium where both the Rams and Chargers will play. Find out how the Rams are engaging with the fans who stuck with them during a two-decade absence, connecting with new fans across the region, and attempting to make an impact in this vast community. In such a big, competitive market, how will they attract new fans and make a difference? With nine other professional sports teams now here, how can they differentiate themselves? And what effect will the Stadium and Entertainment District at Hollywood Park have on the west side of Los Angeles and the region as a whole?

KEYNOTE: Dear White People: Q&A with Justin Simien

The script for Justin Simien's first feature film, "Dear White People," was inspired by Simien's experiences at predominantly white Chapman University. After a concept trailer created an overwhelming response on a crowdfunding site and far exceeded his fund-raising goal, the film won awards at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and San Francisco International Film Festival. "Dear White People" then embarked on an impressive theatrical run—and immediately ignited a national conversation on race, sexuality, and gender.

Now, with the recent premiere of his Netflix series of the same name delving deeper into those issues and reaching an even greater audience, Simien joins us for a provocative discussion of entertainment's role in the turbulent times we find ourselves in. Was there ever really a "post-racial" America? Is such a place possible? How can movies and TV address uncomfortable topics with humor, and what can creators expect when they wade into those treacherous waters?

When Viral Attacks

Thinkmodo is the Clio-winning and Webby-winning viral marketing agency behind some of the most audacious branded digital campaigns in the past few years: the animatronic "Devil Baby" that scared the bejeezus out of unsuspecting pedestrians to promote 20th Century Fox's "Devil's Due," the elevating car that zoomed over stopped traffic creating buzz for Verizon's Hum device, the terrifying live demon girl who actually climbed out of showroom TV sets playing Paramount's "Rings" trailer.

Turns out mashing up viral fun with marketing function is a pretty effective way to create eyeball-grabbing content for major film and TV studios, along with top Fortune 500 brands. But for every video that goes viral, there are hundreds that fail to get any traction. Where did they miss the mark? What are some of the benefits and pitfalls of this risky new marketing strategy?

James Percelay, a former Hearst exec and commercial parody producer at "SNL," is one of the brilliant minds behind Thinkmodo's mayhem. The company's unique strategy generates tremendous online engagement and valuable earned media coverage worldwide, and Percelay is here to tell us how he and his team navigate the viral landscape to successfully develop content that's perfectly crafted for shareability.

The Rise of the Brand Studio

When a major energy drink company became the first brand to launch its own media company in 2007, the concept was novel. Yet, as we all watched, the brand transformed before our eyes, its success undeniable and its products instantly synonymous with the lifestyle of the target audience. Fast-forward 10 years, and we see a whole new crop of brands successfully aligning themselves with consumers through original content, whether it's a hotel chain, a soft drink, or a cellular business. What does this mean for our industry? Get the scoop during this insightful session you won't want to miss.

The Deconstruction of Live TV

Given the recent success of live TV musicals, we welcome experts to talk about what working in the live space means for them and the industry as a whole. How do they measure success? What works, and what doesn't? Facebook Live has already made major inroads in this arena, but breaking through in that platform takes more than just holding a Q&A. We'll explore how networks are now thinking of ways to leverage live-to-social to engage fans who constantly expect much more from them and paving the way for brands, influencers, and other entertainment entities. Another timely consideration is how brands can capitalize on real-time, on-the-ground social media coverage. From long-lead strategy to tactical planning and the nuances of platform partnerships, brands finding success in live social coverage are seeing massive results. What's the key?

This session tackles the idea of content vs. marketing and explores the similarities and differences of the two. Is this game here to stay?

Story Marketing: How to Craft and Tell Compelling Brand Stories That Sell

If content is king, then storytelling is the kingdom's sorcerer. It's where the magic happens. In this interactive session, The Business of Story founder Park Howell will help you learn and apply the bewitching power of story for all of your inbound marketing. Your messages will rise above the noise, connect with your customers like never before, and move audiences to action. Park's promise is to reignite within you the one true superpower we all possess—storytelling—to help you nudge the world in any direction you choose. Participants will learn why storytelling is more important now than ever in business, how to craft a practical story structure to guide any communication need, how to use story to connect shared values with employees and customers, and how to humanize a professional services brand and your B2B marketing.

Speaker:
Park Howell, Founder and CEO, Park and Company Marketing Communications, Inc. (Park&Co)

Under the Influence: The New Famous

Welcome to the "new famous," the influencers with whom Gen Z audiences are obsessed. These personalities develop and create their own content, distribute it on digital platforms, and reach millions around the world on a daily basis. They've also successfully branched out beyond YouTube, from working with major brands and securing endorsement deals to developing and marketing their own products, including makeup, apparel, cookbooks, and novels that have appeared on the New York Times Best Sellers list.

Who are these influencers, and how can traditional brands work with them to reach the millions of younger consumers who live for digital-first content and platforms? You won't want to miss this chance to hear directly from top influencers and learn what brands can do right now to capture this POV.

KEYNOTE: New Best Practices 2017

Our linear TV content and viewers continue to move to new platforms: SVOD, OTT, TVE, VOD, DVR. Some we control; others we don't. But our on-air marketing does a good job of getting viewers to sample them all. What happens when they do? What is the viewer experience? And most importantly, what are we doing to retain and grow our viewership on the platforms we control? In his 2017 New Best Practices session, Lee Hunt does a deep dive into DVR, TVE, and VOD behavior and its effect on linear TV brands.

How Digital Forces Are Reshaping the Customer Decision Journey—and What You Need to Know

It's clear that the way customers make decisions, interact with media, and become loyal has changed. And it's on the minds of leaders. According to PwC's global study of entertainment and media executives, the top concern in 2017 is changing consumer behavior, followed closely by availability of key skills. So how do we address these concerns and capitalize on this paradigm shift? Take part in this immersive and interactive experience led by General Assembly, and you'll walk away with a better understanding of how customers interact with brands and media entities throughout the customer journey.

You'll also gain real-world examples of companies who are shifting their marketing to better identify with 21st century customers, and you’ll develop the ability to leverage new digital skill sets and capabilities to identify and communicate customer characteristics through interactive exercises. Finally, you'll come away with an applied understanding of how customer journey mapping can help identify opportunities to connect with customers where they are and specific ways to make learnings actionable.

KEYNOTE: The Black List

Franklin Leonard is on a mission to make sure Hollywood doesn't give up on making great films. In 2005, he began surveying film industry development executives about their favorite recent feature scripts that had not been produced. Instead of considering which scripts would turn into the most profitable movie, Leonard prompted the execs to simply but fundamentally change their thinking: Which unproduced scripts did they love? Thus was born The Black List.

Since then, more than 300 screenplays from the annual Black List have been made as feature films. Those films have earned over $26 billion in worldwide box office, have been nominated for 264 Academy Awards, and have won 48—including Best Pictures "Slumdog Millionaire," "The King's Speech," "Argo," and "Spotlight"—and 10 of the last 20 screenwriting Oscars.

Since 2012, the Black List has also run a screenplay marketplace that has resulted in hundreds of major agency signings and sales and a half-dozen produced features, including Golden Globe nominee "Nightingale" and Fox's "Eddie the Eagle." The Black List now includes screenwriter labs, live script readings in New York and Los Angeles, 20 screenwriter happy hours worldwide, and an iTunes Best of 2015 podcast, "The Black List Table Reads."

KEYNOTE: Coca-Cola One-Brand Strategy

With a global reach of more than 200 markets, Coca-Cola is currently launching its largest-ever campaign, "One Brand," a global marketing strategy that, for the first time ever, unites all Coca-Cola brands under the iconic brand positioning of one global creative campaign, "Taste the Feeling." The packaging leverages its iconic red color across all variants, and the creative work represents universal storytelling and authentic everyday moments with a Coke at the center. VP of Global Design James Sommerville led both the packaging and the visual identity system, along with the photography campaign language. He will share the insights and strategy of creating such a huge campaign and his vision of depicting "contemporary nostalgia" for the world's most iconic brand.

Where Next for Promos?

In this follow-up to his 2015 session on the future of channel branding, Charlie Mawer, Executive Creative Director of Red Bee Creative, takes a provocative look at why promo campaigns still look remarkably similar to the way they did 30 years ago, considering that both the environment they are viewed in and audience behavior have shifted so radically.

How do we as an industry start to embrace greater innovation in promotional campaigns to keep pace? From the shape and length of campaigns, smart targeting, and hyper-personalization to tips on how to plan "reactivity" and get the best results on different platforms, this stimulating session takes you through groundbreaking promotional strategies and shows how brands and broadcasters have used new techniques to engage with audiences beyond traditional trailer edits.

Anthropology 101: Origin and Evolution of the Branded Content Species (genus: SNL)

In this session, we examine the cumulative change in the population of "branded organisms" that have evolved over a very short period of time. The session focuses on the appearance of new forms of content and new ways of thinking about how we communicate with and entertain audiences through singular yet multiple-sell messages. We'll look at the first identified examples of this species, which originated on "Saturday Night Live," as well as the evolutionary process by which branded content devices have developed through successive iterations. We'll also explore the appearance of new species and varieties through natural selection, content mutation, and hybridization, along with the influence of processes, strategies, and environment as they continue to shape this very intriguing species before our very eyes.

KEYNOTE: When Brands Take a Stand: Activism or Capitalism?

Never before have we seen so many brands stepping forward and taking strong stands on what is happening in the political and cultural landscape. As politics, public policy, and human rights take center stage, and as consumers passionately embrace deeply divided ideologies, brands have not only reacted to the social climate, but in many cases they have also been cultural leaders in communicating their positions. What drives a brand to take a stand, and is its mission brand-based or just good business? What causes a well-meaning attempt to backfire as it did with Pepsi's Kendall Jenner ad?
