Grammys to Move to New York City in 2018

CBS will broadcast the 60th annual Grammy Awards live from Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday, Jan. 28. 2017.

The Grammys have been held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles for the past 14 years. Last June, CBS and the Recording Academy extended their agreement to keep the Grammys on CBS through 2026. The awards show, which celebrates music, has been on CBS since 1973.

To promote the move, the Recording Academy worked with director Spike Lee and creative agency TBWA\Chiat\Day to make a short film (above) about the city and the musical artists who live there. The film takes viewers on a musical tour of the city, and features such artists as Q-Tip, Cyndi Lauper, Joan Jett, Nile Rodgers, Tony Bennett, Maxwell and Grandmaster Flash showing viewers around.

CBS and the Recording Academy also worked with Mayor Bill de Blasio and his office to bring the show back to New York. The Grammys bring in an estimated $200 million in economic benefit to its host city.

“Playing host to the music industry’s marquee awards show is a unique creative, artistic and economic boon to the rich cultural fabric of our city,” said de Blasio in a statement. “We welcome the Grammy Awards back to New York City with open arms and we look forward to continuing to partner with a music industry that supports access and empowerment in the arts.”
