AT&T to Sponsor Aftershow for Univision’s Upcoming ‘El Chapo’

In a move intended to keep viewers engaged with the content even after the main event has ended, Univision is taking a page from the likes of AMC and Bravo and launching an aftershow to pair with its new drama, El Chapo. AT&T will sponsor the program, called El Chapo llimitado and hosted by Univision’s Lourdes Stephen and Carlos Calderon, which will be streamed live on Univision’s Facebook page at 10 p.m. ET on Sundays.

Running 20 minutes, the aftershow will review the most shocking moments from every episode, as well as talk to the show’s producers, directors and actors. Viewers also will get a first look at next week’s episode.

El Chapo Ilimitado is an extra dose of Univision’s most thrilling story of the year and we are bringing an entirely new experience to our audience, giving them the opportunity to engage and experience this story like never before,” said Sameer Deen, senior VP of Univision Digital, in a statement.

El Chapo – or “shorty”—tells the life story of drug lord Joaquin Guzman, who at 5’ 6”, was small of stature but large in power. Guzman ran the Sinaloa drug cartel in Mexico from 2003 to 2014, and had a net worth of approximately $1 billion. He was notorious for his escapes and after being arrested in 2014, he subsequently escaped in 2015 and was on the run until being re-apprehended in 2016. In January, he was extradited to the U.S. from Mexico.

Offering aftershows that allow viewers to spend more time with series they love is becoming common practice after AMC started doing it with shows such as Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead. Chris Hardwick hosted Talking Bad and now Talking Dead and AMC has made the franchise a regular feature of its network with Talking with Chris Hardwick airing on Sunday nights.
